The Passion of Being an Otaku
Hello everyone! I’m Chrisma, a UP Cebu BS Computer Science student, a proud Audista, a certified anime addict, and one of the organizers of the first and second UP Otaku Fest. Since some of my co-organizers are posting their reactions for Otaku Fest, now it’s my turn to share to you my passion for the Otaku Fest.
I was known to be a certified anime addict since elementary. From Sailor Moon to Dragon Ball, to Super Boink and Time Quest, to Gundam Wing and Fushigi Yuugi, to Ghost Fighter and Flame Recca, to Death Note, Naruto, and Rurouni Kenshin, no doubt that I would never want to miss any anime series (although I can never watched all the animés in the world :P). When I started to collect Questor, which is a local anime magazine now being faced out; I saw some photos of coplayers. I was really amazed on how they try to copy a character’s costume and how they hold these kinds of events. Anyways, when I had full access to internet, I saw more cosplayers and they even do some skits recorded on videos. “How I wish Cebu has these anime events so I can also wear an anime costume…” that’s what I thought.
I was a member of the +Anime Addicted+ group in Friendster where I had so much fun sharing my thoughts as an otaku to my fellow members. Then I became a member of the “Anime Elites” forum but I seldom posts due to some personal businesses (aka studies..lolz). After that, a Bagsik (our batch organization in UP Cebu) forum was built by my classmates and co-organizers (I believe they were Pax, Jude, Charles, and Tud) where we had the chance to share our interests to our fellow Bagsik members. It so happen that those co-organizers of mine are obviously otakus so they placed an Anime and Manga section in our Hobbies and Entertainment section where I found out that there are several of us that are otakus. So after much posts, Ara, a BA Mass Communications student and the head of the organizing team of the first Otaku Fest, proposed that we hold a convention for otakus. I remembered that we had this YM group conversation and Ara asked who’s in and we’re all definitely in. We even visited the so-called first anime convention in Cebu, ArchCon, to observe how they hold such event. Together with Jude, we invited the Akatsuki cosplay group and the Naruto cosplay team who were cosplaying there.
Otaku Fest: Revving UP
Organizing the first Otaku Fest was really difficult especially since it’s still starting. We had to move schedules because it was hard to look for sponsors. But then, there’s always a way and we had successfully managed to have E-games, PC Express, and Infinity Colors as our sponsors. Finally, it was held last February 9, 2008 labeled as Otaku Fest: Revving UP. There were maybe a lot of inconveniences but eventually, it was still fun. I was really excited since this is my first time that I’ll be wearing a costume and even saved money just for my costume. If you have attended the first Otaku Fest and can’t remember what I was wearing, my costume was an all-black gothic Lolita (see my photos…). Organizing team was composed of Ara (head of the team), Rey (BSMgt), Cams (BAMC), Em-Em (BAMC), Charles (BSCS), Jude (BSCS), Pax (BSCS), Tud-Tud (BSCS), Jane (BSCS), and me. We were also helped by Marga (BSMgt), Lovely (BSCS), Ivy (BSMgt), Eugene (BSMgt), Liz (BSMgt), Irish (BAMC), Cham-Cham (BAPsych) and Pangs (BAPolSci).
UP Otaku Fest 2.0: The Saga Continues
Then the second Otaku Fest was planned. Organizing team was still the same except that Jane left us (I was really sad because Jane was leaving us but I understand) and Pangs, Marga, Buchik (BAMC), Rachelle (BAMC), and Julie (BSMath) were added in the team. This time, Camille is the head of the organizing team. Bugs, the artist behind the Otaku Fest logo also cooperated with us in designing the tarp and the banners. Jelai, the head of the PAs and the PAs, were also a big help to us in assisting the organizers and the handling of the registration. Though we had the problem again about the sponsors, we managed to push through the date December 13, 2008. Sponsors were Bite Magazine and PC Express, and a special thanks to FFSIPI Enterprises. No doubt, it was a huge success and I’m receiving positive comments from the people who attended. Even though I was kind of off a bit that afternoon because of my exam that morning, I did my best to do my duty as cosplay head and enjoy as much as I can.
I am very proud to say that I was part of the foundation of Otaku Fest. Being an organizer and contributing my passion for anime in this event truly helped me a lot not just having the fun but also somehow developed my social communication to other people. I am very happy to be able to share my enthusiasm as an otaku to my fellow otakus in Cebu. To my co-organizers, thank you very much for the hard work and the wonderful friendship that was built among us. To all of you who believed in us and supported us in the success of Otaku Fest, thank you very much. I will really miss organizing this event but surely, I will continue my support for Otaku Fest. I’m hoping that the next batch of organizing team will have the same passion as we have, to continue what we have started and making Otaku Fest an awaited annual event for otakus…^__^

The Struggle for INC Part 2
“It’s raining INC!”~that’s how we see the first semester’s results for us 4th yr CompSci students in UP Cebu. I can’t believe that after I received my first INC, another INC came up. This time, I’m totally frustrated at the same time, really flabbergasted. Why? We never expect to receive an INC to this elective subject. He (our very good professor, I’m not joking, it’s true) posted to our yahoogroups that most of our projects in CD can’t be read so he gave us INC. And the most stupid part is that he gave our group an INC eventhough he haven’t actually opened our CD. I saw it with my two eyes, our CD was still neatly packaged when we visited him yesterday. Then he immediately opened our CD and copied the files inside it. It was like, “OMG! I’m not that dumb to be tricked like that!!!”. But then again I was speechless. I was really surprised. He gave us an INC and he didn’t even opened our project??? WTF!!! He assumed that all CDs can’t be read since most CDs he opened can’t be read. What a hasty generalization! My other groupmate’s face can’t be painted. I know she was also mad with what happened. But anyways, we don’t have a choice but to prove to him that our project was a success. It seems he can’t also use the projects’ software properly. I mean, if it wasn’t for my other classmate who taught our Prof to set the settings for the software, the projects could not have been read successfully. Anyhow, after much effort, we have proven our project’s success and then our Prof signed our removal form. Does he know how hassle it is to attend such forms? Nevertheless, I already got rid of that INC but it will always be reflected to my records.
The Struggle for INC
Seriously, I’m really tired right now. It’s supposed to be sembreak and what the hell I’m still doing??? Still struggling to comply the requirements of our dearest Professor of Software Engineering? Nah, she has already taken almost 75% of my first sem’s valuable time. And in the end, I still got to have an INC. What a crap. All I want is to finish all these and have my regular sleeping time back to regular. But yet, I can’t attain that simple request.
I just hope that everything will be ok in the next few days; that I can remove this INC and continue my goal of graduating on time. That’s all I wanted.
So help me God.
A Socialite for a Night
First casino play, first clubbing, first Smirnoff taste, first guy that wanted to know me, and first hang-over; all happened in one night in my 19 years of existence.
An aunt cousin of mine who is of the same age as my eldest sister invited as to ate dinner with her in Waterfront Hotel Lahug Cebu City at Port Seafood Restaurant. Well, she’s a Fil-Am but both her parents are Filipino and they live in America. Anyway, after the dinner, we went to the Filipino Casino of Waterfront and it was my first time to be there and play a slot machine. It’s very enjoyable to play and I even matched four pictures twice! Amazing! Then after that we went to Loft. It’s a bar where club music is played and alcoholic drinks are served. Well, it’s where the elites come and dance to kill time. And there, I finished two bottles of Smirnoff Black Ice Vodka, not to mention that it was my first to drink those. There were a lot of good looking guys especially the one that looks like Shirota Yuu. Moreover, my sister suddenly said that a guy wanted to know my name. So, I said ok. The guy introduced himself as John. I can’t believe someone would notice my beauty! Lol! Anyway, that was it, we just introduce ourselves and shook hands then after sometime, he went home earlier than us. Together with my eldest sister, brother and his girlfriend, we ate sisig, drunk, and dance all we want. It was already 2am when we went home and as I got up in the morning, I had my first hang-over. Well, I’ll never forget this experience. ~_^
The Fun and Success of Otaku Fest ‘08
Last February 9, 2008, the first Otaku Fest was held in UP Cebu. The events were cosplay, dota tourneys, original character design, anime film showing, and j-rock/j-pop cover bands. All I can remember about the event was that it was full of fun. I can’t believe I’m seeing a lot of cosplayers, costrippers, and otakus in Cebu. The cosplay, headed by me, was really the highlight of the event. It was really a tough job but still I enjoyed it eventhough I was having difficulties and mistakes. Being one of the organizers of the first ever Otaku Fest makes me feel proud and it proved that truly I am an Otaku. We are very sorry for some inconveniences but we assure you that we will improve.
To all who joined and attended the event, thank you very much. Hontou ni arigato gozaimashita! The event won’t be a success without you people. To the sponsors: EA Games, PC Express, and Infinity Colors, thank you very much!
Currently we are planning for the next Otaku Fest which will be labeled Otaku Fest 2.0 to be held on December. To all Otakus, be prepared! ‘Till the next Otaku Fest! ~_^
I Saw Him Today!!!
I can’t believe that after eight years of not seeing him, I unexpectedly saw him today. It seems I’ve been given signs. First, I recently found his friendster and saw his photos and damn, he’s still cute. I don’t know if he still remembers me but at least he may be familiar with my face. The second is today when I rode a jeep this morning and yes, he’s way better to look at in person. Too close but yet too far. Too close to pat him in the shoulders yet too far to reach him. Anyway, I was trying to reminisce my early elementary years when we were classmates. One of my unforgettable moments was when we had this newspaper dance (I assume you know the rules of this game) in our Christmas Party and it was boy-girl partners. I was really amazed when he asked me to be his partner and of course, I accepted. And we were very lucky to win the game! The prizes were coin banks and unfortunately, I already lost mine. Maybe his is still with him, just an assumption.
I’ve been somehow thinking of him from time to time and realizing that I don’t know him much. But as my sister says, if one person is thinking of another person, that another person is also thinking of the one person. How I wish that’s true.
CMSC 131 and HALE
I took my last exam in CMSC 131 and it was goddamn difficult. I was really frustrated… My partial grade was too low… Anyway, my frustrations took me to SM and window shop a little bit. There, I came across with Joyce and Veron… They’re really getting stronger…how nice… We talked and visited the exhibit in the art gallery. After that, I bid farewell to them… Then on my way out, I noticed that people where waiting for a live performance of a band. I heard some chatter that it’s HALE so I waited also and luckily, I had a nice view in the second floor. And there, I saw HALE performing their songs like "the day you said goodnight", "shooting star", "kahit pa", and many more. But I was a little disappointed because they did not perform my fave "broken sonnet". And Champ is really cute. Anyway, that’s what happened to me today. Still frustrated and sad…
Things That Pissed Me Off…
1. Subjects that I can’t understand…(i.e. CMSC 13…)
2. Failing grades… (hope I don’t have)
3. People who demands a lot of time… (fortunately, it’s over)
4. Boastful and Over-acting people… (I judge by myself)
5. Lastly, the cat who ate my Lechon Manok!!!

Mag Bisiklita Ta!
By: Chrisma Joyce P. Endrina
Kahinumdom ko
sauna,
Gipalitan ka
sa imong mama og bag-ong bisiklita.
Imo dayon mi
gipaibog.
Pero boutan
man kaayo ka,
Kay imo dayon
mi gipahuwam.
Pero dili man
ko kaybaw mobisiklita.
Mao to
gitudluan pa ko ninyo.
Bisan sige
lang ko katumba,
Ug
nagkasamad-samad na ang akong paa,
Nakakat-on
jud ko…
Magpuli-puli
dayon ta sa bag-o nimong bisiklita.
Ang uban kay
maghuwat sa ilang turno.
Usahay kay
moangkas ko sa imong likod,
Niya paspas
kaayo ka mo tindak.
Pero okay ra
kay kamao man kaayo ka…
Nindot kaayo
ang paminaw na makabisiklita.
Gaan kaayo
ang hangin na mosugat nimo.
Makaagi ka og
dahang nindot na talan-awn,
Ug makabati
ka og kagawasan ug kalipay.
Magbisikleta
niya ta ninyo balik!
CompSci Torrents Cheerdance won 3rd Place ~ a very fullfilling feeling
Weee….we won third place in the Cheerdance Competition of UP Intramurals 2007 beating Soc Sci and Management Divisions!!! It’s been a while since I last joined a cheerdance and I thought to myself, well this maybe was or "is" one of my passions… It’s just a wonderful feeling winning a place without having to spend a lot for choreographers and props… I bet if we had enough practice, we have won but still, I never disliked our winning place. Even if I slipped and nearly "fell" at my last lifting position, I still managed to hang to my lifter…All the hard work and pain are all worth it… It’s so nice to feel this experience again and again… Congratulations to all of us CompSci Silver Torents Cheering Squad!!! I’m very proud to all of us… Thank you very much for doing the best…Thank you to our very own choreographers Judy and Carme for taking the efforts to make our cheerdance a successful one. Thank you to all the CompSci peeps who supported us all the way…esp. to Mr. Lao. And lastly, thank you very much to God for guiding and blessing our cheerdance… I will always remember this day of victory… and good luck and God bless to the players for the sports events including me….waaaaa….
